Question: To which blue pigment does "azure" refer to in entries 114, 58v, 59r, 93v: azurite, verditer, ultramarine, or smalt?

Hypothesis: Azure demail refers to smalt, but other azures, unqualified, refer to azurite.

Exp. 1
Follow the egg yolk crushing procedure to prepare all 4.
Procedure: Wash it then crush on marble, grinding it with an egg yolk, followed by another washing. Use a sponge to remove water.
Question: Does it lose some color?

Exp. 2
Procedure:Test results from above in Oil
Question: does it die?
Procedure:Test in egg white or yolk
Question: does it die?

Exp. 3
Procedure: Prepare all 3 with Turpentine oil then grind well
Question: Does it make a useable pigment
Procedure: Prepare all 3 with Nut Oil then grind well
Question: Does it make a useable pigment

Exp. 4
Procedure: Try applying above pigment on Canvas vs. on Wood
Question: Which follows the properties described? Imbibing on canvas better than wood.

If one consistently performs the best, then azure refers to that substance. If it is mixed, then we will need to identify the qualifying language (if any) which distinguishes one "azure" from another. (ex. appending "demail" making azure refer to smalt).
